A Toulouse, Gondemar apprend que la seconde part de la Vérité se trouve dans le Nord. Craignant que ses ennemis ne le précèdent, il abandonne son amour et prend la route avec ses fidèles compagnons, Pernelle et Ugolin. En chemin, il devra se joindre à un convoi de croisés en route pour la même destination que la sienne : Gisors. Incognito, il fait alors la rencontre de Guy de Montfort, fils du sanguinaire Simon. Le jeune homme lui apprend qu'il a été envoyé par son père pour récupérer des papiers d'une importance capitale. Convaincu qu'il s'agit de sa quête, Gondemar va tout faire pour se saisir de ces précieux documents.
Prisonnier et déterminé à trahir la cause de l'Ordre des Neuf pour sauver la vie de sa bien-aimée, Gondemar est ramené à Carcassonne.
